Renowned saxophonist, composer, arranger, producer and educator Tim Mayer is about to unleash his latest Jazz masterpiece, Island Time, on 15 September.

With accolades pouring in from industry legends and critics alike, Mayer’s dynamic presence in the jazz arena has garnered anticipation for his upcoming release.

Praised as “an old spirit in a young man’s body” by the legendary Jimmy Heath, Mayer’s journey in jazz began when he discovered the world of music through his parents’ record player at the tender age of four.

Inspired by icons such as Wes Montgomery, Ahmad Jamal, Bill Evans, and Martin Denny, Mayer’s devotion to his craft became evident when he picked up the saxophone at the age of 10.

The new album demonstrates some of his best work to date, showcasing Mayer’s ability as a virtuoso saxophonist as well as his ear for writing complex, intricate and infectious smooth, funk-tinted jazz.

From these early beginnings, his musical odyssey evolved into a remarkable tapestry of experiences. His immersive education at Florida State University’s Summer Music Camp introduced him to a cohort of talented musicians, including the likes of Marcus Roberts. Tim’s talent took him aboard cruise ships, where he honed his skills playing in diverse styles alongside renowned entertainers.

Further studies at Berklee College of Music under the guidance of luminaries like Andy McGhee, George Garzone, and Bill Pierce solidified Mayer’s position as a jazz force to be reckoned with.

He embarked on a journey that saw him perform and collaborate with the RG Jazz Orchestra in Spain’s Canary Islands and participate in Xalapa, Mexico’s prestigious Seminar and Jazz Festival.

Mayer’s reputation as a consummate performer was cemented through collaborations with luminaries like John Faddis, Bob Mintzer, Slide Hampton, and Arturo Sandoval. His contributions to groundbreaking ensembles like Waitiki earned him consecutive Hawaii Music Awards and a Grammy nomination for La Clave Secreta’s electrifying Latin/Caribbean album, and a Grammy win in 2023, for his participation in Natalia Lafourcade’s Un Canto Por México.

In 2011, Tim Mayer stepped into the spotlight as a leader with the release of his debut album, ‘Resilience’, earning acclaim for his exploration of post-bop nuances. He continued to shine on prestigious stages, sharing his talent with large ensemble settings and collaborations with acts like Don Tiki and reaching number 3 on Apple Music with his single ‘For Miles’.

With a career spanning decades and a musical journey that includes international acclaim and relentless exploration, Tim Mayer’s ‘Island Time’ promises to be a testament to his artistic evolution.
